Bluewater International School
Nursery and Reception Classes (3 to 5 years)

Curriculum

The Foundation Stage, which underpins the curriculum in Bluewater’s Nursery and Reception classes, is distinct in its identity. The curriculum, by which we mean everything that the children do within the school, is planned in accordance with the England and Wales framework “Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, DfEE 2000”.

Six interrelated and interdependent areas of learning encompass all the development stepping stones. It is vital that the stages of development are recognised, as how children learn is as important as what they learn. Teachers ensure that a range of strategies is used in learning and that the teaching is varied and adapted to suit the needs of the individual child.

The six areas of learning are:

Personal, social and emotional development

Communication, language and literacy

Mathematical development

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Physical development

Creative development

In each area children’s progress is tracked through a series of stepping stones. Learning experiences are planned to ensure that individuals are appropriately challenged and have all the foundations for future learning securely in place.

All the children joining Bluewater will undertake a Baseline Assessment during the first half term in order to ascertain individual stages of development, strengths and needs.

This style of teaching depends on careful and flexible planning, including the involvement of teachers in Art, Music, Drama, ICT, Physical Education, Ballet/Yoga, Thai and Modern Foreign Languages.

Pre-Nursery Class (18 months to 3 years)

Curriculum

We follow the ‘Birth to Three Matters’ curriculum (UK Sure Start ‘Birth To Three Matters’, 2002) in the Pre-Nursery. The framework of this curriculum “takes as its focus the child and steers away from subjects, specific areas of experience and distinct curriculum headings. It identifies 4 aspects, which celebrate the skill and competence of very young children and highlights the interrelationship between growth, learning, development and the environment in which they are cared for and educated.”

These four aspects are:

    • the strong child;
    • the skilful communicator;
    • the competent learner;
    • the healthy child.

Our teaching team in the Pre-Nursery plans activities and experiences to support the children’s play and learning. A familiar theme for the children is selected each week, around which activities are planned.
LOWER SCHOOL
18 months to 5 years old

Please note:

The pupils may join this programme during the second week of term. We do recommend that you consult with your child’s teacher to ensure that your child is ready and able to cope with such an extended day.  Parents are encouraged to offer an extra-curricular activity to their children.

Children should be collected from the classrooms, Assembly Hall or adjacent areas at 4:00 p.m. They will be dismissed by their activity teacher.

After School Extra-curricular Activities

Fee paying extra-curricular activities may be made available to Nursery and Reception pupils on Monday, Wednesday and Friday depending on demand and the availability of volunteers and/or professionals.  The cost of the After School Extra-curricular activities varies with each activity provider.

A form will be sent detailing the extra-curricular activities available and associated fees. This should be returned to the class teacher as soon as possible.
